An Apology to Music

Music is abhored and disliked by the people of our society. Yet they use the power of music to calm their anxiety down. This phenomenon isn't strange as we, as a society, are on the verge of an abrupt transition. We are now more inclined to accept the things those were once ignored by our forefathers.

Music is openly regarded as a profession that is unjustly associated with Mirasis. As declared before, music isn't a separate entity linked to a specific group of people. Our local music, whether you like it or not, is a representative of our own very thoughts. It's often debated on a lower level that our local music only centres around the grief of the failure of love. But it is something that is present in our society implicitly. Yet if we look closer, our local music gives an open hint at the notable festivals like Eid. So, it's enriched in different themes those are influenced by the trends of time.

It is a sad reality that women are largely prohibited to listen to music because of the reasons you already know. If we are given free hand to choose the music of our own choice, why not them! If you think music will cause a social revolt in them, but atleast let them enjoy the instrumental music that is devoid of lyrics you are most afraid about.

Our local music may not exhibit a good instrumental bliss, it is the work of artist and his lyrical notes that adds the musical besuty to it. Most of our musicians cannot afford to buy expensive musical gear from Sennheiser or studio grade headphones, yet they successfully alleviate the deficiency of modern instruments through their tablaaz and their sweet voice for their people.

Music is often criticized for the explicit lyrics some songs carry. This type of music isn't composed and produced for you. You cannot lable all songs as explicit. English songs are notoriously attributed to explicitly which is true in its own way but not all (English) songs are explicit. Take a closer look at the lyrics written below:

"Focus on tomorrow, but today's still here
Smoking all my problems, thinking they'd disappear
But they keep burning, all these questions in my head
'Cause nothing's working, nothing" (Happy Where we Are - Tritonal)

This song is a sharp critique on our unchecked enthusiasm for future while our present day problems are still making things difficult for us. The song questions why can't we be contented on what we have now. The answer to this question isn't easy. Thus, songs like this demonstrate how deep a theme of life like this can be presented in such a beautiful and thoughtful manner.

I am Syed by caste and not to speak of composing, even listening to the music was condemned in our clan. But things are changing. Music listening is being accepted as a positive activity in the recent years. I have been an avid listener to music since 2010. I have more than 1,000 songs liked in Spotify. If future permits, I'll surely try my luck to become the Farius, Tritonal or Audien of Mianwali.

Don't feel ashamed of your choices of music before your burger friends. Just listen to it and fly into the realm of your own. But don't transform music into loud noise that may disrupt the lives of other people. In this case, use an excellent pair of headphones.
